What is Valerian?
Valerian is a flowering plant which is native to Europe and some parts of western Asia and more recently it has been reported to be growing wild in North America. The plant can be seen in all its glory in the summer months sporting pale pink flowers (sometimes white) and it is perennial meaning that it will live through the year and will flower more than once.
Valerian has been used since ancient Greece and was documented in the writings of Hippocrates who described the extract of the plants roots to be a good remedy for insomnia. Today it is used a food supplement around the world and is often used to help treat conditions such as insomnia and anxiety as an alternative to prescribed sedatives.
